Thanks for the tip but too bad the orange oil is extremely expensive. Where I live it cost about $125 for a 1/4 Gallon. Cheers

Does anyone know if this will work on fire ants? If you spray plain old foaming bathroom cleaner on common ants, they die in mid breath. They never take another step. Are fire ants different or are they close enough it would work on them, too?

Hey OAG, I am Pat from Birmingham. What kind of store did you find the Orange Oil in. I looked at Wal-Mart & some hardware stores. Can't find it. Fire ants are bad here.

Meant to add, what does the orange oil do? Orange, being more specific. I know lemon is anti-bacterial.

Looking for the Orange OIl locally? What kind of store to look for it? Where will I find it? Can't find so far. Would lemon oil work if I can't find orange?

I put a tablespoon of baby oil, and a tablespoon of dawn dish washing soap into one of those pint size miracle grow sprayers, and filled it with the orange oil. I attached it to the hose and sprayed a 5-foot compost mound that had a TON of fire ants - two mounds on opposite sides. I sprayed enough to empty three containers while I turned most of the pile. The next two days it rained a lot. The third day I examined and found ZERO ants on that pile. I am eternally grateful for your vid. I was determined to do anything to get rid of those ants in a way that didn't harm the compost that I had worked six months to produce.

That I would do if my children plays in my yard, I would put boxes in the colony's without disturbing them . so the children don't step on the colony's.

I'm not sure how this works but UNLESS You can kill the QUEEN(S) in the fire ant colony, the ants will move elsewhere and start a new colony.

And here is a tip for those who are unfortunate enough to get fire ants in the house.....  I have found that a half and half solution of Dr. Bronner's peppermint castile soap with water in a spray bottle works wonders for driving the little buggers right out of the house!!!  I don't know if anyone else makes the peppermint castile soap with the same ingr's and strength as the Dr. B's, but the ants certainly aren't brand conscious, so use whatever comes to hand if you can't find this brand, as long as the formula is pretty close.  If you have a health food store anywhere near they should have it, or online on Amazon.

Hi from northern Texas!!  We have quite a bad issue with fire ants here and I am so glad to see you post such a great and non poisonous method of getting rid of them.  I wonder if regular mineral oil would work as well as the baby oil, as I have read that most brands are just scented mineral oil.  Thank you for taking time to share all your wisdom with those of us who didn't have someone in our lives to personally hand it down.  Keep up the great work!!!  Oh, one more question I though of.  Is there a practical way to put this formula into a hose end sprayer and still be assured of the proper strength to do the job?

My experience has been the darn ants just move a bit and make a new mound. Do you have that? I bought an expensive deant product that had a growth regulator that killed and made the ants so they could not make new queens. If you kill them off, the survivors just make new queens and they move on. This product worked for a year but this year they are back. I hate Fire Ants! I am going to try this for sure!!!!

I will be mixing up some of your ant killer. I live in Central Florida so have plenty of all kinds of ants. We laugh and say if we kill off all the ants my yard will collapse. Preparing some new raised beds (old age getting me) so I am going to treat my ground prior to putting my growing mixture in. Thanks for sharing.

They are making their way north. I think the warming climate over the last fifty years is behind it. Hope I never have to use this information, but its a matter of when, not if. We already have the kissing bug in southern, Ontario. Thanks OldAlabamaGardener

Hello C. Great info. I used Dawn detergent. Now I know where to get the Orange Oil. Thanks much! P.S., the only thing good about fire ants is where they are present, there are usually no ticks.

If you want to have fun and be devious put raw grits on top of the mound. You'll have to reapply for a couple of days but that just means more enjoyment.
